So what do you all feel/think about President Obama's (aka CEO of Chrysler and GM) target of 35 mpg?

its a good thing... more gas for those of us who care more about ET and MPH then MPG. at least on the weekends anyway when the stangs come out.

In Oklahoma gas is cheap and everyone drives a truck ;)...just glad we already have our 4 gas guzzlers...2 Roush cars, 1 diesel truck and my Explorer!!!
Would love to see how they will make a 40 ft motorhome get that kind of mileage
Is everyone ready for horse and carriage again? Seriously, we need to reduce our foreign fuel consumption. Supercharged FFE V6s and other options will feed our thrist for muscle car power. Smart people will develop solutions.

Are you sure, Professor Arnold? Think about it... GM canceled all future High-Performance vehicles. No one knows for sure about Dodge (Challenger). Maybe zinc's observation may turn out to be correct, but with these 35 mpg requirements, what's going to happen to your beloved 5.0 that you've been longing for? If buyers flock to the 5.0 in great enough numbers, that will affect the sales mix for Ford... They may limit production (high prices) or stop plans to sell?

In the short term I think we will see a mix of eco-friendly-er cars and the likes of 5.0 mustangs. Those of us who lust for and drive the muscle cars will have to pay a hefty price, but that’s why I have a 4-cylinder fusion that 1.5 yrs old with 15000 miles on it and a 3-year mustang with 5500 miles on it. I think 2014 in many ways will look like 1974 when this all shakes out and we will be better for it in the long term. Besides their will always be speed freaks and those who cater to US...

You wont make a Sc v6 or 4 banger sound like an all AMERICAN v8 rumble!!;)
Nothing like it to get the juices flowing in a yankee hot rodder such as I.:D

that sound, much like my 93 5.0 with the bassani cat-bk, is a one of a kind and yankee hot rodders such as yourself (and anyone reading this) will never let it die.

I think aaholland is on track with what I'm hearing too. the auto makers are required to meet the "fleet" average of 35mpg. so, they make a few hundred thousand vehicles that get 40-50 mpg and a few hundred that get 20-25. The average of the series should meet the fleet average requirement....I think??

Ford should have no problem meeting that quota. I don't see our ponycars going away anytime soon.

i cant see the mustang ever going away entirely - tho it might change. remember the mustang II's and when the probe was slated to replace the 5.0. thankfully the probe had its on run and the mustang II did its job well enuff to sustain the mustang. for ford to let the mustang die so close to the 50th would be criminal. i THINK we are more then safe till at least then.

Though the mention of 1974 and Mustang II's gets my blood boiling just a bit...I was a brand new sailor in 1977 had saved my pay checks and put together $3500...went home on shore leave and went to the local FORD Dealer...cash in hand...was gonna leave that day with a brand new MustangII/CobraII in Black/Gold with a 302...they wouldn't take my money and wouldn't finance me...soured me on FORD for about 10 years...I REALLY REALLY wanted that Cobra II

then you have GOT to post a pick..... i was 6 yrs old when my dad, a ford employee, brought hm a king cobra. sometimes employees could bring hm fleet cars for a day or two bk then and i was amazed at the hood graphics and stripes and painted wheels. on that note i am always shocked at shows today when people marvel at painted wheels like they have NEVER seen such a thing.

I'll need more garage space...the JRC and the BULLITT occupy the garage as is...and the FREESTYLE languishes in the driveway.

My first Mustang was a 1978 Mustang II with the 4 speed, 302 -2v Black with Gold stripes. If I can manage to scan in an old Polaroid, I will post the pic. I had about 11k on it when I traded for the 79 Pace Car which I thought was GREAT. I will look for those pics too.
Someone said it right...all show and not much go but being 18 at the time and just coming out of a 72 Maverick 4 door with 200 straight 6cyl, it was fast for me!!!
OHHH those were the days LOL.
As for 35mpg overall...I personally don't think it will effect the Mustang all that much, but we may be looking at modding an ecoboost V6 sooner or later.

Back then...we took what we could get...but 139HP from a V8...that was SAD. I've seen some nice example of the breed at our annual car show here. One of our club members has 2-3 of them in various stages of rustification on the side of his garage...I'd take them off his hands...but I don't have anywhere to put em...:D as for MPG's my 03 JRC...does IMHO better than average...as long as I keep my foot out of it. On a LONG cross country road trip last summer the car averaged 28.3mpg...with the cruise set at 75-77mph...and A/C on low...and PREMIUM gas to keep the S/C happy...not to shabby
