Event Description: A sister event to the Monterey Historic Auto Races at Laguna Seca the Coronado Speed Festival is a gathering racing history's unique and pedigreed machines on one of the most distinctive stages - a 1.7-mile course is constructed on the runways and taxiways of Naval Air Station North Island with over 225 of the world's top racing machines. An 11-turn, airport course that may look as flat and full of cones as a parking lot autocross but a long start/finish straight and an equally high-speed backstretch connect a series of challenging turns that test the braking and handling abilities of Classic Vintage Cars and their drivers.
With Mustangs blowing past the bumpers of rival Camaros and harassing Corvettes and Ferraris, the races on the runways of old generated enough excitement to last for months. SCCA and a host of other car clubs did this for years in the 50’s and 60’s. There's nothing quite like a motor sports-racing event: the smell of burning rubber, high-octane fuel and race oil; the sound of raspy engines screaming at full throttle. All of these are components of the Coronado Speed Festival.
Walking around the venue you are immersed in a rich history of automotive racing. There are dozens of tents and booths catering to the automotive aficionado, from vendors selling automotive inspired t-shirts, racing paraphernalia, and some even have vehicles you can purchase outright and drive away. Meguiar’s is there with every bit of their car care product and expertise to make your ride that much better looking than the other guys. Hillbank Motorsports has their trailer there too with the types of toys we love to drool over. Eddelbrock is there with their product hauler as well and they are there to race their vintage Mustangs and Cameros, and many more.
Perhaps the best part of the event is being able to wander through the seemingly endless paddock of garages and mechanics working on the vintage automobiles. Racers and owners alike are happy to talk about the cars they admired at a young age and were eventually able to purchase once their wallets had reached the level of their desires.
Behind the main grandstand is the Car Club Corral (which is also the best parking for the event) an endless slew of automobile clubs representing everything from one of the largest herds of wild Mustangs you’ll ever see to Ferrari and Jaguar to Porsche, Viper, Vets, Lamborghini, Mazda and MINI Coopers. Last year there were 87 car clubs in attendance, bringing the number of vehicles on display somewhere in the range of 2000. While most of the cars on display had undergone meticulous restoration processes, some were simply pristine examples that had been well cared for and had simply aged as gracefully as a bottle of fine wine.
Sound like fun? If so the ROEA has a section of the Car Club Corral and I have the passes for entry. If you are interested my email is listed above and I will be sure to get the pass (good for both days) to you. Admission tickets can be purchased in advance or at the gate when you arrive. Check out the Speed Festival Web Site listed above for more details.
