Speed Festival Web Site: http://www.fleetweeksandiego.org/coronadospeedfestival/

Event Description: A sister event to the Monterey Historic Auto Races at Laguna Seca the Coronado Speed Festival is a gathering racing history's unique and pedigreed machines on one of the most distinctive stages - a 1.7-mile course is constructed on the runways and taxiways of Naval Air Station North Island with over 225 of the world's top racing machines. An 11-turn, airport course that may look as flat and full of cones as a parking lot autocross but a long start/finish straight and an equally high-speed backstretch connect a series of challenging turns that test the braking and handling abilities of Classic Vintage Cars and their drivers.

With Mustangs blowing past the bumpers of rival Camaros and harassing Corvettes and Ferraris, the races on the runways of old generated enough excitement to last for months. SCCA and a host of other car clubs did this for years in the 50’s and 60’s. There's nothing quite like a motor sports-racing event: the smell of burning rubber, high-octane fuel and race oil; the sound of raspy engines screaming at full throttle. All of these are components of the Coronado Speed Festival.

Walking around the venue you are immersed in a rich history of automotive racing. There are dozens of tents and booths catering to the automotive aficionado, from vendors selling automotive inspired t-shirts, racing paraphernalia, and some even have vehicles you can purchase outright and drive away. Meguiar’s is there with every bit of their car care product and expertise to make your ride that much better looking than the other guys. Hillbank Motorsports has their trailer there too with the types of toys we love to drool over. Eddelbrock is there with their product hauler as well and they are there to race their vintage Mustangs and Cameros, and many more.

Perhaps the best part of the event is being able to wander through the seemingly endless paddock of garages and mechanics working on the vintage automobiles. Racers and owners alike are happy to talk about the cars they admired at a young age and were eventually able to purchase once their wallets had reached the level of their desires.

Behind the main grandstand is the Car Club Corral (which is also the best parking for the event) an endless slew of automobile clubs representing everything from one of the largest herds of wild Mustangs you’ll ever see to Ferrari and Jaguar to Porsche, Viper, Vets, Lamborghini, Mazda and MINI Coopers. Last year there were 87 car clubs in attendance, bringing the number of vehicles on display somewhere in the range of 2000. While most of the cars on display had undergone meticulous restoration processes, some were simply pristine examples that had been well cared for and had simply aged as gracefully as a bottle of fine wine.

Sound like fun? If so the ROEA has a section of the Car Club Corral and I have the passes for entry. If you are interested my email is listed above and I will be sure to get the pass (good for both days) to you. Admission tickets can be purchased in advance or at the gate when you arrive. Check out the Speed Festival Web Site listed above for more details.

Awwww...man:(...no more vacation left. San Diego is my old stompin' grounds. Especially the Silver Strand, I was stationed there from 81-91...NAB Coronado(SpecWar)...32nd Street...and NAS Miramar...before the marines moved in.

I'll have to put this on the calendar for next year...

!! Only 4 Weeks until the 11th Annual Coronado Speed Festival !!

This year’s premier car event of the season is racing to the San Diego island of Coronado, a small yet unique community in Southern California. When you are looking for somewhere fun to spend a day or weekend and a unique experience appropriate for all ages, look no further than the Coronado Speed Festival

last year the Coronado Speed Festival attracted over 20,000 spectators, which increased attendance by 15% and this year will prove to be bigger and better than ever before, drawing in car enthusiasts from all over the world.

Once again General Racing Ltd, will produce this exciting under the direction of Steven J. Earle, founder and producer of the Monterey Historic Automobile Races. Since 1974 the Laguna Seca event is acknowledged as the foremost historic car race in America. The Coronado Festival is the sister event to the Monterey Races and a unique opportunity to see these historic machines up close and personal.

Unlike most racing events, every fan is encouraged to walk through the garage area and watch as the race cars go through their final inspections before hitting the track.

You can tour the pits on your own or take a guided tour led by the drivers themselves. The owners and drivers encourage this rare opportunity for all interested from the casual fan to the gear head.

If you are interested in going - I already have ROEA CAR CORRAL PASSES in hand. Email me at j.aswegan@cox.net and I will get the pass to you. Admission tickets can be purchased inadvance or at the gate when you arrive.

This is a great event and a super way to show off your ride with a host of others.

Hope to see you there.

Only 3 Weeks Until the 11th Annual Coronado Speed Festival!!

Our Featured Driver

Camee Edelbrock Looks Forward To The Speed Festival Once Again
Camee entered her first race in 1991, in which she raced her Dad's 1963 Corvette split window, one of six of its kind manufactured for racing; a very special car for Camee. Since then she has raced some of the most legendary tracks in the USA including Watkins Glen, Infineon Raceway and even Daytona. At the time Camee entered the vintage racing world, she was the only woman in her class, and with that came a variety of challenges. Even though most of the guys treated her like a little sister, there were some male drivers that couldn't stand being passed by a woman. Then there was a conversation she had with a well-known NASCAR driver in which she asked him what he thought about women breaking into the NASCAR scene. He said that there was no way women could race at that level.

Comments like this or the occasional broken nail did not deter Camee from pursuing her passion - the one she had for racing vintage cars. She went on competing right along side the guys and beat them every chance she had. She enjoys vintage racing because it's competitive and it's a great way to show off the original muscle cars that helped to make her family's business, Edelbrock Corporation, what it is today.

Camee's successes have inspired many young girls to venture into the racing world as she has. "It's so nice talking to young fans at the tracks, especially the young girls, who look up to me, and are so excited to talk to a woman that races. One girl at a race came up to me with her father. She had a picture of my car she had made the night before in her hotel. She said, 'You are our favorite driver.' It was so sweet. It's these kinds of experiences that make this sport even more fun and very rewarding."

Camee reflects on the Coronado Speed Festival, and her participation, “Being able to race and help support our men and women in uniform is extraordinary. We are so proud of them and are happy to lend our support.”

Stock Car Racing Series

Stock cars will be on exhibit at the Coronado Speed Festival during the noontime activities on both Saturday and Sunday. Confirmed cars so far include Jimmie Johnsons # 48 Chevrolet NASCAR and a #15 NASCAR 1994 Ford Thunderbird and many more. Don't miss the Stock Cars at the Coronado Speed Festival!

The Speed Festival Adds Drifting To The Agenda

San Diego based Drift Circuit is set to host an exciting drifting exhibition at the Coronado Speed Festival. Six of Drift Circuit's best drivers will suit up to bring fans a high-powered show, demonstrating skillful mastery of both speed and movement. The exhibition will take place on the main track on September 27 & 28 during the lunchtime hour.

Drifting is an un-timed freestyle motor sport that is judged by achieving the maximum sideways angle, and speed in the corner. Drifters gain maximum points by striking the proper clipping point, and taking a favorable line that connects one drift smoothly into the next.

In other words, drifters deliberately control their cars to slide sideways at high-speeds, aiming for the maximum points through stylized movements and skilled maneuvering techniques. Major consideration is given to style and crowd appeal. Originating on twisty, narrow, mountain roads in Japan, teams and individuals would compete for respect and the glory of being number one on the mountain.

Mark Maynard's Garage

Don't forget to stop by Maynard's Garage to see the GM Cars, a CTS V, Corvette ZR1, Nissan Cube, GT-R and much more! You will also have the opportunity to chat with Mark Maynard, Wheels Editor for the Union-Tribune.
