SHELBY — Hours after the first class of NASCAR Hall of Fame inductees was announced, one future inductee hopeful was spending time with fans in Shelby.

Trademark Panama hat and all, Jack Roush, co-owner of Roush Fenway Racing, was pleased with the initial selections.

“I don’t think that the inaugural group for the Hall of Fame could be any better,” said Roush. “They helped found the sport and breathe life into it.”

He himself hopes to eventually be an inductee.

“I do the best I can on every race and we’ll just have to see what happens,” he said. “There are a lot of very deserving people out there.”

Roush spent time autographing hats, model cars and other memorabilia at Keeter Ford, the top Roush dealer in North Carolina.

But he also signed something significantly larger — Mustangs brought in by many of the members of the Blue Oval Ford Club.

Lewis and Frances Webber, of Shelby, who are both part of the club, own one of Roush’s signature Mustangs.

“We’ve been getting ready for a few weeks,” said Frances as she pointed to the passenger-side dashboard her husband’s 2008 model. “He has a spot already cleaned off.”

Twelve-year-old Alex Arrowood had serious ambitions for his time with Roush.

“I’m going to ask for a pit pass for qualifying,” he said as he stood in line to get his 1997 Mark Martin model car and a Roush Mustang poster signed.

NASCAR fan and arguably one of the first people to show up at the dealership to meet Roush, Jim Bridges said he wanted to get a Certificate of Authenticity signed for a 2000 SVT that Roush racing did a final assembly on for Ford.

His favorite driver?

“Carl Edwards, of course.”

Edwards is one of Roush’s team’s drivers. He stands eighth in the standings in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

“We’ve gone through a little of a low point here. We have two cars in the chase, which is not bad. We haven’t won as many races as we did last year. Last year we should have won the championship, but let it slip away,” said Roush. “We’re anxious to get ourselves an advantage again and I think we know how to do that.”

He has hopes that Edwards could capture this year’s top spot.

“It’s going to be hard. We have to get some cooperation from the guys in the top three spots, that’s for sure,” he said. “We’re less than 200 points out as I recall and the championship has been won from 200 points out.

He said the team will just have to wait and see what happens.

“We think that we have the right package and suspension and setup for Charlotte. And if we do have, who knows,” he said. “It could be a new beginning for us.”
